FLINT AND STEEL CO. is co-founded by twin sisters, Marilyn and Rachel Ang in December of 2015. The designer stationery brand started out in the comfort of our humble bedroom as a sweet escape of one of the toughest losses in their lives.

In January of 2016, they were invited to  the BIG 10 Festival in Brunei among 50 other local start-ups. Inspired and energised, they launched the first Small Town Art Market (STAM) in September 2016. The market took off with 6 vendors in The Granary, a tastefully renovated building found in the heart of Kuching, that once served as a grain warehouse in the early 1900’s.

The event yielded great response from artists and the public, each event brought many people together. The event grew consequentially and drew large crowds of makers, performers and visitors. In early 2017, STAM’s 2-man team welcomed their third member, mix media artist Nia Latif on board. Together, they founded Little Entrepreneurs Art Workshops and Junior Art Market for children aged 12 and below as a platform to encourage creativity in kids, hone social skills, as well as gain confidence and experience in entrepreneurship.

STAM launched Kuching’s first Junior Art Market, a kid-friendly event filled with great activities and performances to encourage creativity in kids. Within a year, the art workshops evolved into the Little Entrepreneurs’ Start up programme, a 4-day experience and a platform for kids as young as 7 to learn about entrepreneurship and to discover themselves through art.

In March of 2018, Flint and Steel Borneo moved into its very own work space. The space was designed to house the works and products of the local vendors, where their products are made available to our shoppers throughout the year. It is a creative space where our vendors gather, work, learn and share things. The space is open for workshops and events and STAM’s behind the scenes.

Our dream is to constantly create new experiences for people and to inspire people to discover themselves through art. And if we have one thing to say to you, it will be - Be in love with the things that make you different and believe in yourself boldly. Surround yourself with the right people, learn, have fun, work really hard and whatever you do, do it well!

“And the Master, God, stays right there and helps me, so I’m not disgraced.

Therefore I set my face like flint, confident that I’ll never regret this.

My champion is right here. Let’s take our stand together!”
